KATZ/NOVOA Architects + Planners is an award-winning, full service Architectural firm specializing in residential and commercial projects, including new construction, alterations, and rehabilitation of structures.
The firm was founded in March 1988 by its partners, Ileana Martin-Novoa, R.A. and Jonathan B. Katz, R.A, MBA, in Springfield, NJ, and moved to Millburn-Short Hills, NJ in 1989. Since its inception the firm has developed a reputation for excellence in the areas of Architectural Design and Client Service. From its base in Short Hills KATZ/NOVOA has done projects in New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Vermont and Puerto Rico.
The firm’s portfolio encompasses a diverse range of work including high-end residential projects, indoor pools, commercial structures, religious buildings, and banking and health club facilities. Residence, Bedminster, New Jersey: Complete rehabilitation and expansion of a 1720’s stone country home, situated on 24 acres rolling acres in the heart of hourse country in New Jersey. Services: Architectural and Procurement of Variances.
Barn and Hunting Lodge, Bedminster, New Jersey: 4,500 square foot structure to house a hunting lodge, barn and garage. Services: Architectural.
Residence, Palmas del Mar, Humacao Puerto Rico: 6,000 square foot Mediterranean style residence on a hill in the Palmas del Mar Resort, overlooking the ocean and the island of Vieques Island. Services: Architectural.
Residence, Mendham, New Jersey: 16,000 sq.ft. Bucks County style country home on 23 acre estate.Services: Architectural and assistance in procurement of site development and health department permits from the township of Mendham, and NJ DEP permits. This is Katz/Novoa’s second project with the Clients.
Beach House, Southampton, New York: 4,500 sq. ft. beach house on the Speonk River. The design of the house evolved from an emphasis on solar exposure, wetlands and resource preservation and views. Services: Procurement of all permits and approvals (from the Department of Environmental Conservation, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Southampton Health Department and the Southampton Board of Adjustments) Architectural and Construction Management. This is Katz/Novoa’s third project with the Clients.
Residence, Maplewood, New Jersey: Alterations to an existing Tudor style residence in Maplewood. Services: Architectural. This is Katz/Novoa’s second project with the Clients.
Residence, Chatham, New Jersey: Alterations and expansion to an existing Colonial style residence. Services: Architectural. This is Katz/Novoa’s third project with the Clients.
Residence, Chatham, New Jersey: Alterations and expansion to an existing expanded ranch style residence in Chatham. Part of the project consisted in adding a “homework / therapy room” for the Clients’ autistic child, and reconfiguring the existing spaces to make the house work more efficiently for the child’s needs.
Residence, Springfield, New Jersey: Alterations and expansion to an existing Colonial style residence to add a handicapped lift, first floor bedroom, and to make the house handicapped accessible for a young quadriplegic man. Services: Architectural.

Residence, Nantucket, Massachusetts: 3,000 sq. ft. vacation home and 1,300 sq. ft. guest cottage on a hill overlooking the Nantucket Sound. The design was guided by design parameters established by the Nantucket Historical Society, budgetary constraints, and panoramic views from the site.

Residence, Warren, New Jersey: New 4,600 square foot residence. Services: Design and Construction Documents.
Residence, Short Hills, New Jersey: Complete renovation and expansion of an existing 1950’s ranch style house. Additions included a large family room and partial second floor. Interior rooms were combined and reorganized to give way to a more spacious, brighter and better flowing structure. Services: Architectural and Construction Management.
Residence, Stowe, Vermont: 2,300 sq. ft. vacation home. The design concept derived from the desire to reflect traditional Vermont architecture while incorporating contemporary design elements in the interior of the house. Services: Architectural through Construction Documents.
Residence, Montclair, New Jersey: Total renovation of an existing 1920’s center hall Victorian-colonial house, and addition of a media room, library, conservatory, indoor swimming pool, and four-car garage.

Residence, Gladstone, New Jersey: 6,300 sq. ft. English Manor house on three-acre site in New Jersey’s horse country. Services: Architectural through construction drawings.
Residence, Far Hills, New Jersey: Addition of family room, study, exercise and billiard rooms to an existing Williamsburg Colonial residence on a two-acre sloping site. Services: Architectural.
Residence, Far Hills, New Jersey: Total renovation of existing 2,500 sq. ft. house, and addition of 2,400 sq. ft. of new construction, including a large master bedroom suite, and breakfast and great rooms. Services: Architectural.
Residence, Short Hills, New Jersey: Addition of 2,800 sq. ft. of new construction and total renovation of an existing 4,350 sq. ft. private home. The project included total remodeling of the house, retrofitting attic spaces into living quarters, and construction of a glassed-in breezeway linking a new indoor swimming pool to the existing structure. Residence, Livingston, New Jersey: New 5,000 sq. ft. home on the grounds of an old estate. Main design thrust was to integrate the clients’ preferences of a center hall colonial layout and a Tudor exterior, as well as to relate the new house to an existing turn-of-the-century mansion, which it faces. The program included a large bedroom, his/hers walk-in closets, television/reading alcove, a sun deck and a luxurious bathroom. Critical factors controlling the design were the clients’ desire to avoid any exterior evidence of new construction, an extremely steep and inaccessible site, and very limiting building setback requirements.
